Longthrow

A bomb takes two seconds to get there. Nothing waits for it.

Longthrow is a wave defense game played from the deck of a single tower, and the whole skill in it is the lead. Things walk out of the treeline toward the thing you are protecting and you throw arcing bombs at them — but the bomb is in the air for up to two seconds, the blast is under three metres across, and a walker covers more ground than that while it flies. Aiming itself is untimed; the pressure comes entirely from the field.

How Longthrow plays

Throw where they will be

Hold the button and take as long as you like lining a shot up — nothing about aiming is on a clock. The flight is. Throw at where something is standing and you miss it at every range, so the game is one question asked over and over until you can answer it without thinking.

The reticle never lies

The arc drawn while you aim and the bomb that actually flies come out of the same solver, and bombs detonate on contact rather than bouncing on past the ring. The blast lands where the ring is drawn, which means a miss is always yours and never the game's.

Waves that breathe

A wave is a budget of enemies rather than a stretch of time. Clear it and the field empties for eight seconds while you reload and reposition; fall behind and the next one starts anyway and the two overlap. How well you are playing is something you can hear in the pacing.

Losing pays

Every run banks salvage, win or lose, and more of it for holding on longer. The armoury turns that into heavier charges and faster hands — and the upgrade shows up in your hand rather than in a menu, because the bomb you are carrying changes mark by mark.
